What Are Digital Dental X-Rays?

Dental x-rays are an important component of helping patients achieve healthy smiles. At ACE Dental of Temple, we are committed to providing safe, efficient diagnostic services and proudly utilize a digital imaging system to screen for hidden oral health concerns. Our team takes digital x-rays (radiographs) during routine exams and other procedures to view the interior portions of your teeth and jaw that cannot be seen when looking into your mouth. Many oral conditions may only be visible on these images, including bone loss, cavities between teeth, impacted teeth, and tumors. When our general dentists can identify these issues early, your options for care may be more conservative and less invasive. Talk with our Temple, TX team for more on how digital x-rays can enhance our ability to deliver safer, more precise, and convenient care for your smile.

Who Is a Candidate for Digital Dental Imaging?

Digital x-rays may be ideal for children and adults. These diagnostic images are an important part of a comprehensive dental exam and may be necessary to evaluate emergency dental needs, perform certain treatments (such as root canals), and reveal oral health conditions that may otherwise go unnoticed. Dental x-rays can show decay under restorations and between teeth, curved roots, tumors, cysts, abscesses, malpositioned teeth, and unerupted or impacted teeth. While our digital x-ray system produces far less radiation than traditional films and is safe for the majority of patients, our Temple, TX team strives to limit patient exposure whenever possible. Women who may be or are pregnant are advised to let us know ahead of time so we can take special measures.

How Are Digital Dental X-rays Taken?

Our team will generally take dental x-rays at the beginning of preventive or emergency visits and as needed throughout the course of dental care. The advanced diagnostic system captures images of your mouth rather quickly, typically in less than five minutes, and is considered to be more comfortable than traditional x-rays. To take capture images, we will place a small sensor inside your mouth next to the area we wish to see, and take the x-ray. Within seconds, the image of your teeth and jaw will be visible on our computer monitor. After we have completed your set of x-rays, one of our dentists will review them with you and discuss any treatment needs.

How Often Should I Have Dental X-rays?

We typically recommend that patients have a series of bitewing x-rays taken every year to evaluate for cavities between teeth and bone loss in the jaw. This can allow our team to identify oral health conditions as early as possible. Every 3 – 5 years, patients may have a panoramic or full series of x-rays taken, which show a wider view of the mouth and can help us assess jawbone health, orthodontic needs, and additional concerns. For patients with acute dental issues, like a broken tooth or toothache, we may take a periapical x-ray to view the specific tooth and surrounding area. Once taken, digital x-rays are stored in each patient's chart and viewed by our team as needed during dental visits.

Are Dental X-Rays Covered Under Insurance?

Dental x-rays are generally covered by most dental insurance providers at certain intervals. Because coverage for x-rays may differ among plans, a member of our billing team will review your policy and let you know of any out-of-pocket costs. ACE Dental of Temple is pleased to accept a convenient selection of affordable payment options to help you and your family get the quality care needed for healthy smiles.
